A Modern Lava Lamp Through the Eyes of Different Artists

The RETRO THINC Sublime Series was designed to become part of everyday living—not simply as a modern lava lamp, but as an object that quietly belongs in a space.

Recently, one of our customers shared a photograph of a corner in their home.

There was no styling, no professional lighting, and no intention beyond capturing an ordinary moment. A Sublime lamp stood beside a stack of books, a houseplant, and a Dalmatian resting on the sofa.

It was simply a home, lived in.

Then something unexpected happened.

Artists began drawing it.

Some recreated the scene with pen and ink. Others interpreted it through watercolor, colored pencils, or digital illustration. Some preserved every detail, while others reduced the composition to its essential shapes, colors, and light.

The same corner appeared again and again, each time through a different perspective.

Some focused on the lamp.

Some drew the dog.

Some captured only the atmosphere.

What fascinated us was not that people were drawing a RETRO THINC lamp.

They were drawing a moment.

A photograph became a sketch.

A sketch became a painting.

The scene continued to evolve as each artist added something of their own. None of the illustrations were identical, yet each remained unmistakably connected to the original photograph.

Design rarely ends when it leaves the studio.

Once it enters someone's home, it becomes part of everyday life. Sometimes it quietly disappears into the background. Sometimes it becomes part of a memory. And occasionally, it inspires someone to create something entirely new.

Seeing the Sublime Series reappear through so many different interpretations reminded us that the most meaningful design is not defined by how closely it is observed, but by how naturally it becomes part of people's lives.
