Made Around the Flow

Custom-formed glass and hand-spun aluminum, designed as one composition around the flow within.

A lava lamp is defined by movement. How that movement is experienced depends on everything around it.

At RETRO THINC, glass and aluminum are designed as one composition: glass brings clarity; aluminum defines the object’s proportion and presence.

Our borosilicate glass vessels are shaped through a custom forming process developed around the proportions of the lamp. Consistent wall thickness, precise symmetry, and smooth curvature keep light, color, and movement visually clear.

The glass does not ask for attention. It keeps the focus on the movement within.

Experienced makers shape each visible aluminum component from a flat sheet on a spinning lathe. Hand spinning gives direct control over every curve and transition. Each surface is then brushed and finished to catch light with a controlled, even texture.

The methods are different. The standard is the same.

Dedicated tooling creates consistency. Human judgment ensures that curves remain continuous, materials meet cleanly, and the final silhouette feels balanced.

Every decision serves the object. Its value lies in the clarity of the whole.

Switched off, the lamp stands as a sculptural object. Switched on, the structure recedes and the movement takes over.

Custom-formed glass. Hand-spun aluminum.

A familiar object, reconsidered through material, proportion, and light.
