RETRO THINC Roamlight Receives Recognition from Design MasterPrize and IDA 2025

RETRO THINC Roamlight receives design recognition in 2025.

In 2025, the RETRO THINC Roamlight received recognition from both the Design MasterPrize and the International Design Awards (IDA).

While awards were never the objective behind the project, they offered an opportunity to reflect on a question that has guided the brand from the beginning:

What happens when a familiar object is reconsidered through a contemporary lens?

The Roamlight series began with a simple observation.

The lava lamp remains one of the most recognizable lighting objects of the last century, yet many of its forms, materials, and manufacturing methods have remained largely unchanged for decades.

Rather than treating it as a nostalgic object, RETRO THINC approached it as a design problem.

How could the visual fascination of a lava lamp be preserved while rethinking its proportions, materials, craftsmanship, and relationship to contemporary interiors?

The result became the foundation of the Sublime and Orbs series.

Hand-spun aluminum components, custom-developed glass vessels, and carefully refined proportions transformed a familiar object into something more architectural, more enduring, and more adaptable to modern living spaces.

The recognition from Design MasterPrize and IDA reflects a broader appreciation for projects that revisit established typologies rather than inventing entirely new ones.

For us, the awards are not a conclusion.

They are simply another step in an ongoing process of refinement.

The original lava lamp has existed for more than half a century.

Our work begins by asking what it might become next.
