Trombone: A Sculptural Candle Warmer Lamp Inspired by Bauhaus Design

February 02, 2026

Exploring rhythm, proportion, and light beyond the lava lamp.Since the beginning, RETRO THINC has been interested in objects that combine function with atmosphere.

The Trombone Candle Warmer Lamp emerged from the same curiosity.

Inspired by the physical structure of the trombone, the design reinterprets the instrument's elongated proportions and segmented tubular construction through a minimalist architectural language. Rather than directly referencing the instrument itself, Trombone extracts its most recognizable characteristics and transforms them into a sculptural everyday object.

The design follows a principle often associated with Bauhaus design: form follows function.

Two parallel metal tubes create a strong vertical rhythm, while the suspended lampshade introduces a sense of balance and visual tension. The result exists somewhere between a functional candle warmer lamp and a small-scale sculpture.

As a candle warmer lamp, Trombone gently warms scented candles below, releasing fragrance without the need for an open flame. The light source becomes both a practical tool and an integral part of the object's visual composition.

Material selection plays an equally important role.

The metal structure provides precision and clarity. A solid natural marble base anchors the object and introduces a sense of permanence. Warm illumination contrasts with cool materials, creating an atmosphere that changes throughout the day.

Three lampshade finishes — Red, Black, and Yellow — offer distinct personalities while preserving the same underlying form.

Like many RETRO THINC objects, Trombone was never designed to be purely decorative.

Nor was it intended to disappear into the background.

Instead, it occupies a space between sculpture and utility, where everyday function becomes part of a larger visual experience.

A sculptural object shaped by geometry.

A quiet presence designed for everyday living.
